FAQ – HOW DOES THE COVID-19 SITUATION IMPACT DEBT COLLECTIONS: Many people believe or have been led to believe that there is or will be a “moratorium” or stop on debt collection efforts during this time. To date, that is not the case. Several public agencies have asked the Nebraska Supreme Court to issue a moratorium on not only debt collection, but also evictions. As of this post, nothing has been put in place in our court system to restrict those activities. In fact, Nebraska Supreme Court Chief Justice Mike Heavican has specifically stated that Nebraska Courts lack the authority to halt evictions amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic (see Lincoln Journal Star, March 23, 2020). However, some lending institutions have expressed a willingness to extend payment periods and payment deadlines, making it easier for consumers to weather this storm.
